A Sweetly Flavorful Stop

Chachimbiro, Ecuador –

The Burro looked bored.

Then again, I suppose I would be bored too, spending most of my days going round and round.

Always the same small circle, tied to the same stick.

Not even much of a view. Sugar cane fields, a two-lane road, and the roadside café (if that’s what you would call it).

Then along comes a bus full of foreigners who circle around and take pictures of you doing your job.

It’s like being a performer on stage.

Or maybe a celebrity being hounded by paparazzi.

Then again, you do get to eat crushed sugar cane remnants from time to time.

I suppose it’s a reasonably good life.

For a Burro…

Spinning Silk at the Farm

Siem Reap, Cambodia –

My driver wasn’t happy with me. I was not sticking with the agenda he had planned.

“Why do you want to go see the silk farm?”

He had planned on taking me to see the military museum. And now I wanted to go elsewhere.

“It’s a long drive to get there. I’ll need gas.”

“Well, if you really don’t want to take me where I’m wanting to go, there’s a tuk-tuk driver just around the corner that was wanting my business.”

“No! If that’s where you want to go, I’ll take you.”

I guess he really didn’t want to lose that final day-fare.

Hot Soup and Mean Doors

Delft, Netherlands –

The look on the Waitress’ face said it all. Shock and concern.

I didn’t know what had happened behind me, but I could tell it wasn’t good.

I turned around to find Dore standing there, holding her hands to her face.

“What happened?”

“The door hit me in the face!”

“Are you alright?”

“No, the door hit me in the face!”

It was my fault.

Unwelcome Entropy

Dallas, TX –

The parts were practiced and ready.

The strings had just been replaced so they had that bright, lively sound.

Everything was plugged in, turned on, tuned up.

So, I pressed “Record” and…

Nothing…

Visiting the Forbidden City

Huế, Vietnam –

The emperor looked angry.

He wasn’t looking at me, and I couldn’t tell at whom his anger was directed.

Suddenly, as he momentarily glanced in my direction, his mood shifted.

He smiled.

The thoughts raced through my head.

Was he smiling at me? Was he smiling because he was pleased with whatever fate he had decided to inflict?

What pronouncement would he utter, and what effect would it have? Would I be dragged away by guards, or left to go on my way unharmed?

An Educational Bus Ride

Liberia, Costa Rica –

Did you know that there is no disease in Costa Rica?

Well, it’s not that there’s no disease, but that whatever you have, it can be easily cured.

Of course, part of the cure requires you to have a Costa Rican mother.

There’s always a catch…

A Trip Back in Time

Guédelon, France –

“What are you lookin’ at?”

I know that’s what the goose was thinking as it eyed me after taking a drink from the bucket. I could see it in the way it looked at me. I could see it in his eyes.

Of course, if the goose really could speak, it’d probably be saying “Quels sont tu regardes?” After all, it was a French goose, living in a medieval village.

Well, technically, it wasn’t a medieval village, just a recreation of one. A self-sufficient recreation, complete with all of the craftsmen and vocations necessary for the undertaking of building a castle. Including the (under construction) castle.

There’s Gold in That Buddha!

Bangkok, Thailand –

I can almost hear the conversation…

“Oh no! You dropped it!”

“I dropped it? No, you dropped it.”

“Like it matters? It’s broken. We’re both dead.”

“Wait, what’s this inside? It looks like…”

“Gold! That’s gold inside!”

“Wow, get the boss! We’re saved!”

Security Fast-Pass

Dallas, TX –

She did it. Don’t ask me how, or why, but Dore’s gotten herself on the TSA Pre-Check list.

The thing is, she doesn’t know how she did it.

And, to be honest, I’m a bit jealous.
