Butterflies, Hummingbirds, and Orchids

Mindo, Ecuador –

It was a long hike down the mountainside to reach the river.

We had the option of swimming, if we had brought our swimsuits.

We hadn’t.

And there were families there.

So we figured it wasn’t a good idea to strip down to our birthday suits for a quick dip.

Not that that’s allowed.

Although there were people swimming in what looked like underwear.

But then we’d have to spend the rest of the day with wet underwear under our clothes.

Something about that just doesn’t appeal to us.

Maybe it’s because we’re not young and carefree enough.

Maybe it’s because we can imagine how that would feel after a couple of hours.

I mean, it’d be one thing if we were staying nearby and could go change into dry clothes afterward.

But we weren’t.

On Top of the World

Cotopaxi, Ecuador –

It’s quiet, at the top of the world.

Peaceful, with the only sounds being the wind, and your travel companions.

Well, and the occasional suicidal bicyclist.

Of course, it could be that we’re here in the middle of the week, so everyone’s home, at work or at school.

Coming here on a weekend or holiday might be a different story.

Still, there’s a certain beauty in the desolation.

The absence of most life.

Well above the tree line, where the vegetation is mostly scrub.

A Lone Horse

And other than the wild horses, there’s not much in the way of wildlife to be seen.

Of course, there are plenty of rocks and boulders.

After all, this is an active volcano that we’re standing on.

Or, at least, semi-active.

A Day At The Market – Otovalo Saturday Market

Otovalo, Ecuador –

We’ve all seen the image.

The roasted, whole pig.

In the center of the banquet table.

With the feast going on all around.

Well, here’s a slight twist on that scene.

There is the roasted, whole pig.

At least it started out whole.

It’s been carved on a bit.

And there’s a lot of activity going on around, just like in the feast scenes.

Only we’re not in a banquet hall.

And the activity going on isn’t a celebration of any sort.

Nope, it‘s the everyday activity of a bustling market place.

Lots of stalls, all around, where people are selling and buying.

And there, in the midst, is the food section.

Sandal-Making the Old Way – Visiting an Indigenous Village

Cotocatchi, Ecuador –

The man paused to rest for a moment.

He had just reduced an agave petal to a set of threads.

And he had done this by setting it against a long board that he was holding against his body, and running a rock up and down the length of the petal.

And then, he was back in motion again, picking up another agave petal and starting again.

We had witnessed him doing this to several petals already, and he would continue for several more.

All to reduce the petals to the fibers trapped inside.

A Long Soak in a Thermal Spa Pool

Papallacta, Ecuador –

It was a cold, wet day. The rain falling non-stop.

We had planned on doing a little hiking around, to see what might be there to be seen, but the weather had other plans.

Well, seeing the sights wasn’t why we had come to Papallacta, so I guess it was only fitting that we wouldn’t get to see them, whatever they might be.

Even if it hadn’t been raining, it’s not like we would have been able to see much of anything. The fog took care of that.

That’s the thing about the weather, it doesn’t care what you have planned, it’s going to do what it wants.

And today, it seems to want us to spend our day being wet.

And cold.

And miserable.

But we had other plans…

A Sweetly Flavorful Stop

Chachimbiro, Ecuador –

The Burro looked bored.

Then again, I suppose I would be bored too, spending most of my days going round and round.

Always the same small circle, tied to the same stick.

Not even much of a view. Sugar cane fields, a two-lane road, and the roadside café (if that’s what you would call it).

Then along comes a bus full of foreigners who circle around and take pictures of you doing your job.

It’s like being a performer on stage.

Or maybe a celebrity being hounded by paparazzi.

Then again, you do get to eat crushed sugar cane remnants from time to time.

I suppose it’s a reasonably good life.

For a Burro…

Up the Devil’s Nose

Riobamba, Ecuador –

What kind of freeloading cheapskate rides on top of the train?

Oh yeah, us.

And we paid for this?

Yup! Paid good money for this.

Unfortunately, it may no longer be an option (riding on top of the train). That’s what health and safety concerns get you.

Yachak! (Gesundheit?)

Somewhere in the Andes, Ecuador –

Sploosh!

Good thing…

Sploosh!

my eyes are closed…

Sploosh!

because these Yachak keep…

Sploosh!

spewing some sort of…

Sploosh!

alcoholic liquid across…

Sploosh!

my face as they…

Sploosh!

make their way…

Sploosh!

around the circle.

The air was crisp and cool. We were gathered in a circle around an altar in the yard that was covered in fresh fruit and other offerings as the Yachak, Ecuadorian Shamans, formed a circle between our group and the altar, performing a cleansing ceremony on us.
